Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I get my loved one signed up?

Please see our participant packet in the "Our Programs" page. Once filled out, you can submit via email or by mail. We will contact you when your application is processed!

  • Do you take insurance?

We do not take any insurance at this time. Please see our Scholarship application located on Our Programs page.

  • What will my loved one do during a lesson?

During a lesson, our instructors will create a lesson with a wide range of different activities that are specific to the participants needs. Instructors will adapt games, skills, and riding techniques based on the participants learning process. This will help them learn to ride as well as sharpen other skills to use in their every day life.

  • How old do participants have to be?

There is no specific age range for participants. Our program is based on individual, specific needs rather than age.

  • What happens if we have to miss a lesson, or we arrive late?

If the rider is not able to attend the lesson, we request that you give us at least 5 hours notice so that we can reschedule our volunteers and horses. We encourage riders to arrive at least 5 minutes before their scheduled lesson. We will accomodate the riders remaining time if they are less than 15 minutes late. Arriving 15 minutes or more after your scheduled lesson time will result in loss of the lesson. In either of those scenarios, the full cost of the lesson is charged.

  • How should participants dress for a lesson?

Long pants and closed toed shoes will be the most comfortable and safe for your lesson. Keep the weather in mind; gloves, mittens, hats, or jackets are recommended in the colder months.

  • Are bike helmets okay to ride in?

All riders must wear an ASTM-SEI approved riding helmet in our program. Athelas will provide helmets for your use. You will not be able to use your own bike, motorcycle, or ski helmet.
